Using case studies in engineering ethics education: the case for immersive scenarios through stakeholder engagement and real life data

Our contribution is part of a broader study conducted in cooperation with the national accreditation body Engineers Ireland that examined conceptualisation and education ethics engineering programmes Ireland. The paper qualitative examination use case studies includes 23 from 6 higher institutions aims to determine (RQ1) how cases are selected, (RQ2) goals envisioned for instruction, (RQ3) characteristics scenarios employed (RQ4) preferred application by instructors. A first finding notes diverse set studies. focus more on decision-making professional contexts less power relations, equity societal mission engineering. second highlights discrepancy between instructors employ their application. Engineering typically include individualistic, hypothetical historical scenarios. Nevertheless, favour immersive real or realistic practice, containing factual real-time data, which can provoke students reflect ethical issues. Considering this aspirational discrepancy, we conclude recommendations guide development instruction.
